A Spanish electricity bill often shows a clear total but an unclear structure. The document may contain lines such as potencia contratada, energía consumida, peajes, cargos, impuesto eléctrico, alquiler de equipos and compensación de excedentes — and it is not always obvious which part of these costs solar panels can actually reduce.

To assess solar properly you need to look not only at the total amount, but also at what it is made of: how much the home consumes during the day, how much in the evening and at night, what part of the cost is fixed, whether there is surplus compensation, and whether a battery suits the home.

Why a Spanish bill is hard to read

A Spanish electricity bill is built from several different parts. Some costs depend on real consumption, some on contracted power, some on taxes, regulated charges and equipment rental. Two homes with similar totals can have completely different savings profiles after installing solar panels. One home may pay a lot due to high daytime consumption — solar can have a strong direct effect there. Another may have a high share of fixed costs or consume mostly in the evening and at night, and the calculation will be different.

Find these lines on your bill

Spanish bill terminology stays the same across providers. These are the main lines you will find:

Potencia contratada

Contracted power — fixed part of the bill that depends on the contracted kW available to the home, not on actual consumption.

Energía consumida

Energy consumed — the part linked to actual kWh used. This is what solar panels usually reduce most directly when the home uses energy during sunlight hours.

Peajes

Regulated grid charges — linked to use of the electricity network. May partially remain even after a solar installation.

Cargos

Additional regulated fees included in the bill structure, not always tied to your solar generation.

Impuesto eléctrico

Electricity tax — calculated according to tariff rules and current legislation.

Alquiler de equipos

Meter rental — small recurring line that solar panels don't directly remove.

Compensación de excedentes

Surplus compensation — when panels produce more than the home consumes, the surplus may be exported to the grid and credited on the bill.

Which parts solar panels may reduce

Solar panels mainly help by reducing electricity bought from the grid. The main effect appears when the home itself uses the energy that the panels produce.

Why daytime consumption matters most

Panels deliver maximum effect when the home uses energy at the moment it is produced. The more daytime consumption overlaps with solar generation, the less electricity needs to be bought from the grid.

On a Costa Blanca villa, daytime loads such as air conditioning, pool pump, EV charging, water heating and appliances can be partially or fully covered by the system. This is called self-consumption (autoconsumo).

If most of the consumption happens in the evening and at night, panels alone may not be enough for maximum savings — at that point you should look separately at whether a battery makes sense.

What happens after sunset

After sunset the panels stop producing, but the home keeps using electricity: lighting, fridges, internet, security, climate control, water heating and appliances on standby.

Without a battery, this electricity is bought from the grid. With a battery, part of the daytime solar energy can be used in the evening and at night.

How a home with panels and a battery works

Day

Daytime: solar panels → home → battery charging → surplus to grid

Night

Night: battery → home → grid only when battery runs low

A battery does not create new energy. It stores part of the solar energy produced during the day and makes it available in the evening or at night.

When a battery is actually useful

A battery is especially useful when two conditions are met: there is enough surplus solar energy during the day to charge it, and there is meaningful evening or night-time consumption.

A battery should not be picked simply because the home uses electricity at night. The full profile matters: daytime load, share of self-consumption, surplus to grid, evening and night consumption, and seasonal use of the home.

If there are no daytime surpluses, there is little to charge the battery with. If night consumption is small, the battery payback is weaker. But when there is daytime surplus and active evening use, a battery can clearly increase the share of own solar energy used.

Why the tariff also matters

The economics of a system depend not only on the number of panels, but also on the price of electricity at different hours, the rate at which surplus is compensated, and how much energy the home can use itself. A generic 'you need X panels and a battery' answer without analysing the bill and the home's usage pattern is usually too rough.

Why villas on Costa Blanca need an individual assessment

A villa with a pool, air conditioning, electric water heating, garden systems, security, guest use or seasonal occupancy is very different from a standard apartment.

One villa may have most of its consumption during the day — pool, AC, appliances, maintenance. Another may consume mostly in the evening and at night, especially if the owners come only in certain seasons or the home is used for guests.

For a villa, buying a standard solar package without analysing the bill and the real usage pattern is risky. It can lead to the wrong system size, an unnecessary battery or, on the contrary, missed savings.
