Why heating a pool makes so much sense in Girona
In the province of Girona a pool is usually perfectly usable in July and August, but the water takes a long time to warm up in spring and cools down quickly as soon as the September nights turn cold. The result is familiar: a pool that took a serious investment and that, in practice, gets used for a few weeks a year.
The pattern is strongest inland and around the houses of the Gironès, the Pla de l'Estany or La Selva, where the day-to-night swing is wide: the sun warms the surface through the afternoon and the early hours undo much of that work. Along the Costa Brava the dominant factor is usually wind on plots open to the sea, which accelerates evaporation and cools the surface.
A correctly sized heat pump does not change the climate: it offsets those losses continuously so the water stays at usable temperature for more months. The realistic goal is to extend the season at both ends — spring and autumn — not to keep an outdoor pool warm in midwinter.
How a pool heat pump works
A pool heat pump does not burn anything to make heat: it takes heat from the outside air and transfers it to the water through an exchanger, using the filtration circuit the pool already has. That is why its performance is measured as COP — the ratio between heat delivered to the water and the electricity used to move it.
Air temperature
The milder the air, the better the unit performs. That is why output in May or September differs from the colder weeks, and why sizing has to be done for the months you want to cover, not for an annual average.
Full Inverter technology
It modulates output instead of switching on and off. Holding temperature with continuous low-power running is more efficient and far quieter than recovering it from cold every time.
Filtration hours
A heat pump only heats while water is circulating. If filtration runs too short or is badly scheduled, the unit cannot do its job however powerful it is.
Fit with solar self-consumption
It is a daytime, predictable electrical load — exactly the profile a solar PV system serves best. If you already have panels, or are considering them, the two should be studied together.
What determines the right unit for your pool
There is no standard output per square metre. Sizing comes from combining several facts about your pool and how you use it — the same facts we ask for in the form:
- Water volume. Dimensions and average depth. This is the mass that has to be heated and held, and the first factor in the equation.
- Target temperature. A lap pool and a family pool with children are not the same brief: every extra degree is paid for across the whole season.
- Months of use. Covering June to September and covering April to October are two different projects, with different outputs.
- Outdoor or indoor. An indoor or enclosed pool loses far less heat and allows a more modest unit.
- Thermal cover. Its presence changes the calculation entirely, because it cuts the overnight loss that drives real consumption.
- Site conditions. Wind exposure, shade, distance to the plant room and the space available for the unit with the ventilation it needs.
- Existing installation. Condition of the filtration, cable sizing and the contracted power at the property.
Heat pump and cover: why they work better together
In an outdoor pool most heat does not escape through the floor but through the surface: evaporation, wind and overnight cooling. A thermal blanket or cover acts precisely on those losses, in the hours when nobody is using the pool.
- It stops evaporation, the dominant loss path in uncovered pools.
- It keeps the heat gained during the day, so the unit restarts in the morning from a much higher point.
- It reduces the running hours needed to hold the same target temperature.
- It often allows a tighter unit instead of compensating losses with raw output.
We do not quote fixed savings percentages, because they depend on each week's weather, on how disciplined the cover use is and on the chosen temperature. What is constant is the direction: with a cover, the same unit delivers more and runs fewer hours.
